Wi-Fi vs. Hardwired PoE Security Cameras: Which Do You Need?
Wi-Fi cameras have their place. Here's when a hardwired system is worth it.

The question we hear most on calls about security camera installation goes something like this: “This Ring camera is $150. Why does yours cost more?” It’s a fair question, and the honest answer starts with how the camera is connected.
The short answer
Wi-Fi cameras have their spot, and they suit a lot of people’s needs. If you want an eye on the front porch, a Wi-Fi camera can do the job.
For a business, or for full coverage of a home, we recommend a hardwired PoE (Power over Ethernet) system. Here’s why.
How each one connects
A Wi-Fi camera sends video over your wireless network and usually needs power at the camera, from an outlet or a battery.
A hardwired PoE camera gets one cable that carries both power and video back to a recorder on site. No batteries to charge and no relying on your Wi-Fi signal reaching the far corner of the lot.
What happens when the internet goes down
This is the big one. When your Wi-Fi or internet drops, a Wi-Fi camera stops sending video, which is often exactly when something is going on.
A hardwired system keeps recording, because the cameras and the recorder are wired together on your property.
A camera is only worth what it records when you need it.
Where the footage lives
Many Wi-Fi cameras save short clips to the cloud, and how much you keep depends on the plan you pay for.
A hardwired system records continuously to a recorder on site. We size the hard drive to how long you need to keep footage, and a typical system we design keeps about 30 days. When something happens, you scroll back, find the moment and save the clip from your phone.
Built for Arizona heat
Consumer cameras are built for consumer use. We install commercial-grade cameras and mount them to limit direct afternoon sun where we can, so they hold up through a Phoenix summer.
Side by side
| Typical Wi-Fi camera | Hardwired PoE system | |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Your Wi-Fi | One cable for power and video |
| When the internet drops | Stops sending video | Keeps recording |
| Recording | Clips, often in the cloud | Continuous, on a recorder on site |
| Footage kept | Depends on the plan | About 30 days, sized to you |
| Installed by | Usually you | A licensed contractor (AZ ROC #346667) |
| Warranty | Manufacturer only | 1 year on everything new; 3 years on LTS Pro-X cameras |
Which one do you need?
- One or two cameras at home, mostly for peace of mind: Wi-Fi can be enough.
- A business, a parking lot, a warehouse or full coverage of a home: hardwired PoE.
- Not sure? That’s what the walkthrough is for.
What to do next
Every property is different, so we don’t guess over the phone. We’ll walk your property with you, show you where each camera should go and what it will see, and then put every part in a written quote. Book a free walkthrough and we’ll set a time.
Questions
Do you install Wi-Fi cameras?
Yes. Wi-Fi cameras suit a lot of people's needs, and we install them too. For a business, or full coverage of a home, we recommend hardwired.
How much footage does a hardwired system keep?
It depends on the number of cameras, the hard drive and the recording settings. We size the recorder to how long you need to keep footage, and a typical system we design keeps about 30 days.
Can I still watch my cameras from my phone?
Yes. A hardwired system records on site, and you can still see live view, play back footage and save clips from the app on your phone.
